Oooooh...!!! I like this very much! Her pose and over sized coat are great... Kinda eerie...it seems as if the adult in the distance is the one who should beware....
I like this very much, the brooding, metaphorical essence of it. I like the processing, it works very well. What I'm not *sure* I like as much is the "looking down" perspective on the child. I mean, compositionally this works extremely well, and I suppose the metaphor on "child observed" rather than "from the perspective of a child", but still a part of me wants to see you working from a much lower angle here.
It's a bit of an adult angle on the world. Snap down. The view really is the child's view and hard as it might have been the view from the lens might have been a bit more of that child's view up the road to the unknown future of no health insurance, poor education, Democrats that act like Republicans and Republicans that act like Democrats. In other words, a knee bend for the shot might have brought the personal side of the child more into the composition. Cynical as usual. Happy New Year.
For others looking in -- I think this is a strong picture, technically. It is a well-balanced composition and "moves" throughout the frame well. It appears to be a touch dark on my monitor (which is set too bright, by most standards), and that may have hurt with some of the darker monitored votes. Very interesting shot.
and for Don (I went scouring the Internet for a poem for this, 'cause I knew there had to be one, and I am a terrible poet):
The Waking World
Out of time’s windows
He gazed—into the heavens,
Into planets, unnamed galaxies
—Light-years away,
With sealed vistas
That opened wide
For the macabre-naked eye—to see.
And unto him appeared—
Wild streams of midnight tears
Glittering like unprotected fire:
And so spellbound was he,
With all he had seen,
He crossed into the dream world,
The lost world of the woken:
And was never again seen.
I love that b/w conversion. I need to play with calculations. Got any tips?
red channel tends to make skin brighter (mixing red with itself sometimes creates a spooky effect). blue is usually the darkest. mix and match. use multiply unless it's too dark. then use overlay. you can also lighten by using less than 100% opacity. just fiddle til it looks right. and it only works for some pictures. I never know until I try it. bucket told me to convert to b/w this way, so it must be true.
Damn this is good, Don!
Things don't quite seem right here!
The awkwardly twisted legs, the oversize jacket, no hands and face visible.
Why has she been abandoned by the adult?
Dang! I wish I could write like you to explain what I'm feeling about this shot... : )
Really fun image: whacky. I think I would have liked to see the road side on the right for at least as far down as to her hood level... not sure why - just find her positioned too far to the right of the image... Excellent strong contrasts.
