Nice idea! It took me some time to see that the right pencil was breached to compensate the refraction. The waters is a good background, too. Nice lighting. -stephan
I was looking this up in the dictionary to relate the title to the photo and I think the word you were thinking of is Refraction. That is the bending of something by dissimilar mediums. Or, by the pencil being broken, I was thinking you might have meant "fracture" which means the breaking of something. I noticed that these appeared to be non usa pencils, so in that case, you did a fine job of getting close either way. Setting that aside as it has nothing to do with my rating of the photo, the lighting is great. I love how the water ripples and the light goes through the water. I love the angles as well. You did a great job with this photo. Good luck in the challenge.
The blurry quality of the water and lights within it draw me to this a lot, and like the texture of the broken pencil - it's very clever that it's the one that looks straight. I only noticed it second time of looking (this is probably 10th). 6, Kavey
This image reads to me as a nice experiment but I stil think "so what; what is this image trying to tell me?". Why are these pencils in the water other than for purposes of an experiment? The refraction and the water make for pleasing effects. 5 Journey
Really interesting photograph -- made me look two or three times to figure out what was going on. I'm not sure I like the framing... both pencils originate and end without any real anchor to the frame of the photograph. The large amounts of 'blank' (water) space are kind of disappointing, too. Perhaps you could try reframing this vertically?
