I simply seized the moment, without my tripod..and so really should have had a deeper DOF. I am entering because I like it. This is in an old farmhouse on Lake Muskoka-the wind billowed in, and the lighting was to die for...but getting the shot with her requires speed...make it happen now or never. I am lucky to get five shots in...
I left the negative space at the top to emphasize how small she is..
levels, rotate, lightness to gray to quadtone, crop, curves, smart sharp
Thank-you for all the wonderful comments-much appreciated.

Thanks for the comment! This is marvelous!!! The blowing curtain adds so much to this, but the lighting is wonderful. I really need to explore lighting more...
I'm not quite sure that this photo separates you from the pros...it seems it proves you are one of them! Great photo. I love the crop and use of negative space. It is very effective. :)
this is almost the exact photograph i've been wanting to take my whole life. a once in a lifetime moment with near perfect light, composition, and emotion. great job!
what? i didn't comment on this yet? thought I had...sorry man, something's wrong with my brain lately. this is a wonderful shot that deserves it's place. interesting choice not to crop off the left side.
You were very nearly cheated out of your much-deserved first place by an obvious fake. I'm really and truly happy for your sake that justice has been done, and that you can now fully enjoy the fruits of your efforts.
On a side note... I also hope that this sends a strong message to DPC'ers out there to get to know your craft.
The vast majority of us won't allege that a photo should be DQ'd unless we ACTUALLY know what we're talking about.
Well spotted, Imagineer!
Hey, an image like this is not supposed to win a ribbon. I mean, where are them wind mills, boats, or orange skies, or at least glasses with liquid? :)
You out of all people, I'd think, wouldn't care one bit about whether or not this was yellow, or red, or blue. It's a wonderful shot, and that is enough. Congratulations.
siezing the moment is far more important than the technical quality of an image (which, I think is pretty nice here)..when it comes to shooting people.
This has nice light, and the image conveys an overall feeling.
I think a crop off of the left and the top somewhat though may help, great image though, I think it shoulda won.
I really like this shot. Love it actually. But I have an observation, which I'm sure it's just a mistake, but how could you use an aperture of 2.8 on a lens that only goes to 4.0?
I AM so happy THIS WON a ribbon. It was definitely one of my top 3 favorites in this challenge! I'd say, what separates you from those that are technically perfect -- the real pros -- is that YOU have an award winning, 2nd-place ribbon and they don't :) CONGRATULATIONS! This is just awesome!
So happy to see you up here. This image is so full of life, so real...absolute magic. This is not just a photograph to just look at, it is one to be experienced. Have we not all felt this breeze and seen this light? It has positively made my morning to see this on the front page. This is the work of a true photographer.
this is one of those 'I wish I had taken this shots.' Perfect the way it is - no cropping needed, no better focus - amazingly beautiful. I didn't vote this challenge but if I had, this would have been my 10. Congrats on a well deserved ribbon.
Only wanna-be pros call themselves pros.
The rest of us just get on with taking photos 'cos we luv it.
I luv it!
Excellent capture and a well deserved ribbon.
Your daughter is lucky to have a father who is so creatively capturing her childhood. You are compiling an impressive portfolio that your daughter will cherish forever. Congratulations.
I can't imagine why you would think you are seperated from the pro's with this shot. I love it! Can't get anymore perfect than this. adding to my favs!
That is beautiful. Love the movement, lighting. I wish she wasn't so centered but other than that - man oh man. The tonality of it is gorgeous. I've come back to this a zilliion times during the challenge. Just a class act and such a stand out. 10
Super. Understated. Full of cinematic photography wonder. Perhaps the challenge, although perfectly met, is not an integral part; but still one of the top three to me.
9 - Excellent image. Not much to 'suggest', maybe the staircase railing cropped out, but unlikely - looks near perfect to me. I want to say a whisker of a nudge rotate up on the left - but I think it is just a visual thing. The b&w works so well. Up to 9 from 8.
very nice light and comp. After finishing to view and vote for all the pictures, this is definitely my favorite. I would have cropped a bit the picture to remove the last stair and perhaps even the whole left part 5cm behind the little boy's back... but anyway, i hope you'll win, as for what i've seen in this contest, you totally deserve it !
What a BEAUTIFUL photo! I think if this were cropped on the left a little more so the stair rail was not in the photo, and maybe a little at the top, it would look like a gallery photo! I LOVE IT!!!! The lighting is exquisite!
Besides the photo being top notch...it's also cute. I'm wondering how it would have looked with more stairs showing and less dead space at the top. Probably just as good...nice job. 10
very cool - would love more detail in the black behind her so the black wasn't so overpowering here - however, maybe that was your intent - my vote is for a skoosh more detail though - 7
One of my favorite shots in this competition. That's why I think it will be a top contender for a ribbon. Perfect on so many levels. It evokes much emotion. Well done!
Great lightning, the motion of the curtain is well done too. Your picture makes me stop for a moment and thinking about, what happens outside the window. A highly impressive shot, thanks for sharing and good luck for the challenge!
