Yes this was a LOT of work, and I wish it had been Advanced Editing! Everything you see here is real... no prints or monitors involved.
Processing: Converted from RAW, curves, levels, Noise Ninja, shadow/highlight, USM and HSL.
Wow... I was hoping for a high score, but didn't expect a blue. I'm a little embarrassed by the lighting, though. I was trying to keep it low so the lamp would show up, but then the hamster was too dark (I borrowed the hamster from a friend and didn't know how big it was or what color until a few hours before the deadline). I sacrificed a lot for that little lamp: a mini Christmas tree bulb with a phone wire running down through the spool and along the seam, then taped to two D batteries behind the wall. The lamp shade is a candy wrapper. Getting the hamster to look at the camera was luck and determination... I'd prop him up on the cap and get off maybe two shots before he tried to scurry away. He kept grabbing the cloth, too (good thing I glued it down). My kids were rolling on the floor watching me try to control the little varmit.

Next time just glue the hamster's paws to the table! :D Though you might want to use something other than your lens cap... Great shot, all the effort was worth it.
Shannon, I just calibrated my monitor with a Huey and this looks totally different. Not sure if it's actually right yet, but before the hamster was pretty dark, now I can see it's fur pretty well. I'm almost afraid to go back and look at my shots. But somehow, I still need to figure out if this setting is right!
I would LOVE to see your outtakes on this! Better yet would have been someone videotaping you trying to do this. I'm amazed that you pulled this off! I know advanced editing would have made it easier, but this has to have made the win so much sweeter! Great job!!
This had scalvert written all over it. Definitely a signature piece with your creative imagination and elaborate setups. Once again a very well done shot and well-deserved blue...congrats!
Congrats on yet another ribbon you hog you! Like I said before, what I like best about this shot is the attention to detail, the "broom" and the bed made up and it´s all so very cozy.
My son (username yakatyou) was looking over my shoulder and marveling at this shot. When he noticed who's shot it was he said "Oh, it's scalvert" in the tone of voice that sounds like someone saying 'well that explains everything."
You know that you've got a reputation when a twelve year old recognizes your work.
This was a clear winner...thought this might ribbon and you did yet again!!! I love the story, it is so good to see how something like this is done. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story Shannon
WTF??? Hahahah, this one definitely takes the cake... or the lenscap? I actually like the lighting here, because it adds to the mousehole feeling of the shot. Most impressive, however is the creativity. I knew whoever was taking the blue on this challenge would be going outta the way to get it. Congrats on a more than well deserved blue!
LOL! I KNEW this was you! Only Shannon would go to these lengths! Well done! Congrats - well deserved. If only you could find a way to make a living doing this. :) Let me know if you do, I'll buy a franchise. :D
Your creativity is absolutely amazing, challenge after challenge you always comes up with something different, something original, something that makes us wonder ... How did he do it? ...
To be honest I liked Trollman's shot better but it's great that you were rewarded with blue. I love how your pretty darn good at taking photographs but far better at coming up with great ideas. Congrats!
Sure got all the details worked out, fantastic job. There are parts there that are a little too dark imo, but you are getting a 10 for the hard work none the less.
I am so happy that your shot made it to the top even though it is not technically a 10 maybe. The DPC'ers have surprised me in the best of ways.
Shannon - YOU are the master of elaborate & creative setups. HAHA Well done! Congratulations on pulling off another terrific shot - well constructed, presented, & executed as usual. Great job.
There are very few things that can make me laugh out loud while sitting alone and stareing at the computer... Your creativity and work deserve a 10+ and I hope a ribbon.
Congratulations on your ribbon! Superb use of lenscap in a photo that tells a story like no other in this challenge. I looked over all images in a second run, bumped this one to 10, and decided that nothing compares to it.
One of my favorites - I love all the thought and effort you went to (and I adore your little friend, too).
You managed to come up with a purpose for the lenscap, instead of it just being there because it was required. Cute idea and great execution!
Thanks for the laugh, just look at that expression. hahahaha. Oh my gosh this is just the best image. Adding to my favorites. Hope you do well. (10) :)

Nice work. Here you was a director of this one frame movie. As wirter and director you get it right. As photographer you left your actor in some way much darker to me.
Ohhhhwuh!!!!! This is absolutely AWESOME! How did you DO THAT!!!! I don't know about the other voters, but I just can't give this anything but a 10! Soooooooo cute and creative!!!
I love shots that tell a story, and this one is fantastic. This reminds me of a story I vaguely remember when I was growing up, with a little thread spool as a mouse's table, etc. It's a tiny bit grainy, which is the only thing keeping it at a 9 instead of a 10 for me.
Wow, that's quite a setup for this shot! Or is this maybe always in your house? This photo makes me laugh, the look on the face of the little "varmit" is priceless! Good work!
hahaahaa! that is sooo cute! must have taken you awhile to set that shot up... great job, the focus is perfect and right where it needs to be. great expressions too
