I am banging my head against the wall here :( :( :(
I have been working at this for the last 6 hours with no progress :(
I am using photoshop cs3 (but also tried through cs2), and am trying to print a black and white photo but they keep coming out with a strong red/purple cast. I am using the latest epson paper icc profiles, and have photoshop to be in charge of controlling the colors. I have turned off color management in the printer settings. I really think i have everything set correctly but they still keep coming out wrong. I had it working well before I reformated my computer and was using cs2, but now I just can't seem to get a good print :(
yeah, i did a nozzle check and all of them seem to be in order. it has been a while since i printed on this printer so perhaps that is it?? but i am a little sceptical to that idea. The amount that it is 'off' looks very much like problems I had once before, i just don't know how i fixed it..... that and all the nozzles seemed to print just fine on the test sheet.
Hmm - could be double colour correction? If you are running windows then it would be worth deleting any profile that windows has associated with the printer (in case ICM is getting in the way).
Otherwise it's back to the old favourites (bet you've done all this already):
Printer driver : Correct paper type, no ICM, manual adjustment, zero colour adjustment in manual mode, no automatic enhancement/"improvement" options
well i thought i was going to jump up and down with happiness but not yet.. things are still the same :(
but when i clicked on the control panel | printers | epson r1800
then clicked on color management
windows had a number of profiles there it probably enjoyed picking from to mess things up. I deleted all of those, but nothing seemed to change. :(
This may seem kinda silly, I've not done it with photographs, but I have with colored print. So I'm not sure what kind of results you will get, but it seems worth a try. Usually in your printing set-up, there is a place to check the box - print in black and white. Have you tried that? It would use only the black cartridge then. I know that in printing, black is made up of all the CMKY - so this might not work for you. I think I'd try it though, if it were me.

i am pretty sure that is not an option on the epson r1800
Just to check that the epson profile itself isn't the problem, can you either proof the picture in Photoshop or convert it to the epson profile?
If you don't see the red tint it does suggest it is either Windows or the printer driver.
yeah when i view it with the proof set up everything looks fine.
HOWEVER, when I am in photoshop and and click on "print..." to get to the printing dialog, CS3 has an option for 'match print colors' as sort of a preview to see what it is going to look like. That puts a funny color cast on the image.?!? not sure why that happens, although i am not sure how accurate that preview is supposed to be, especially when the preview through VIEW | PROOF COLORS looks good.
ok, little update. I manage to get that 'funny cast' in the proof view as well if I select 'simulate paper color' in the 'paper set up' area.
not sure this is any help though, i think it is just a funny looking proof, but on the other hand, maybe there is a reason for the odd cast!.. it is not the same redish cast though, it is more just a greyish cast.
does anyone else have cs3 and a r1800 epson printer? can you get if you get the same sort of cast on the print preview?
Color cast problems in B&W prints (with an Epson R800) made me scream and pull my hair out too. Then I found QuadTone Rip, which is, as the name implies, a RIP software (shareware) for printing B&W images. No color cast problems whatsoever anymore. It also allows the user to create custom curves and ICC profiles.
Gee, I even responded in this thread earlier. Didn't have an R1800 at the time. Now I do and I'm having major problems trying to print with the canned profiles from either LR or Photoshop CS2 or Elements 4.0.
When printing from the fax/image viewer everything seems to work fine with the canned profiles.
I've searched the internet and it seems to be a failure to communicate between Adobe and the print driver.
Anyone else having this issue? Solved it? (other than buying a different printer) or have any suggestions?

I think it was old ink.
I had this problem 2x, the last time I got so frustrated that I just took out EVERY ink cartridge and replaced it with a new one. The problem was fixed... simple as that.
How old is your ink? mine was probably in the printer for 6 months without being used.
The printer is new (though can't say how old the ink is). The profiles work fine if I'm not printing through an Adobe product. I'm investigating PIM (plugin for CS2) to see if that makes any difference. Also, I may try with the black point compensation box unchecked. With it checked, the glossy profiles are heavy on the green, and the matte profiles are heavy on the red. (that's in the preview window, not just the print)
Also, for some images, the profiles seem fine for all but glossy paper.
Solution that seems to be repeatable though doesn't make much sense.
1) In Photoshop CS2 select No Colour Management (Elements - same as source) - or let printer determine colours
2) In Printer driver, select ICM, input profile (from image file) and output profile (for printer)
3) select the appropriate paper type etc. etc.
I haven't found a way to say no colour management in Lightroom (yet). I thought of selecting the image profile as the printer profile but that's not an option. I can't get it to list any of the profiles used -- sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), ProPhotoRGB and there is no option for no colour management.
Note: I've only verified the print preview so far however, previously when using the WinXP print wizard, the preview was very close to the print output.
One more thing, the epson R1800 print driver doesn't seem to know what to do with the ProPhoto RGB colour space. Converting to Adobe RGB (1998) or sRGB before trying to print seems to clear that problem up.
