I wasn't going to work this challenge like a free study -- i.e. find a picture and peruse book titles until I found one that fit. It had to be a book I read, and the image had to tie into it somehow.
I discovered French novelist Jean-Patrick Manchette several years ago when I started reading crime and spy fiction in translation. Only two of his many novels had then been translated into English, and I read them both. Hungry for more, I was thrilled to hear that a third one would be available in English in 2011. This was Fatale, the story of a beautiful female avenger who sets her sights on infiltrating and undoing a corrupt French resort town.
Like Manchette's other books, there is dark humor and graphic violence; the action requires more than a stretch of the imagination. Dig deeper, though, and you'll see how Manchette crafts his stories into vehicles for his own subversive political and philosophical views. This, more than anything, is what keeps me coming back.
My image is litter -- or is it a dangerous femme lurking in the bushes? Both have connections to the story which I hope you'll read.
