For those wondering, this is a very easy effect to achieve: the result looks much more complicated than it really is to do. The prerequisite is that you have basic knowledge of layers and masks.
Main steps are as follows:
1) Shoot a portrait. Use a background that will be easy to mask out (such as green screen if you can, but anything slick will do).
2) Mask the background out
3) Continue masking things out, and cut slices through the face, using a small and edgy brush, doing plenty of small irregularities (to simulate torn paper)
4) Copy the remaining face slices in separate layers, so that you can move them around, and position them as you like
5) Shoot some pieces of torn paper
6) Mask them out, and position them behind the face layers. Transform/Rotate/Deform them as needed.
7) Add some shadows on the paper to make things as convincing as possible
8) That's it! You can add any background of your choice. I chose a very simple one, so that the image doesn't look too crowded.
Feel free to PM me if you would like some more details. Have fun!

Love the creativity as usual. See you on the front page again and thanks for the interview. No doubt another 1x entry as well here. I have no clue how you match up the textures of the back of your shirt through the neck so flawlessly.
Great take on surrealism (or the invisible man :).
I don't find the, uhh, inside gray colour too convincing and tridimensional, if this makes sense. Not sure if a different hue on it or on the background would have made a difference under that respect. Good work.
Very nice. I can't find anything wrong with this as it works so well as a photo on it's own, a portrait and an avatar (sized down)...great job! Can't wait to see how you pulled it off so I can start doing the same thing (Hint hint: let us know how when it's won the blue).
