I'm so impressed by the way you thought outside the box on this photo. I'd rather have this hanging on my wall than the typical "hallmark" photos we see everyday on this site. Excellent work!
I'm still dismayed. The 'foreign culture' excuse of unawareness of the iconic redness of a Radio Flyer wagon is no excuse at all. Everyone here has by definition a computer, and thus a Google or equivalent. DPC challenges only ever present the voter with a tiny handful of unmistakably ambitious images to consider. It takes only a moment for the culturally unaware to inform themselves, and thereby be equipped to make an informed judgement. Lack of awareness is forgivable in an artist, but lack of curiosity is not. The real magic is very often in the oddball images that you don't initially comprehend.
Very nice photo Ben. The shallow focus is well placed. It's an interesting composition. It has nice tones and deep blacks. I believe it has emotional impact too. I think it's irrelevant whether you know that radio flyers are red in color(although I'm sure many that did know and still gave you a low score). If this had been a mono photo of a telephone box, and I enjoyed it, I would have scored it highly too. I would give the photographer the benefit of the doubt assuming that they "saw" the photo as red when they made it. It's a shame people are so narrow minded. Sometimes you have to look beyond what is presented to you.
That's quite interesting, what our mind does at time. I mean.
a friend of my dad used to dive and fish coral pretty deep, up to 100m. He is a biologist as well, so perfectly aware that red bandwith is one of the first to kiss goodbye and disappear when diving deep. Still, he could swear he could see the coral as red anyway :)
This said, I have to admit my brain lacked the previous exposure to work out the trick wih this image, as you say it's a north American icon :)
yeah im not arguing with that, when i saw it i knew it would be a postumous ribbon, just for a no colour shot in a colour specified challenge, and thats not a bad thing, but as has been said its very north american based, same as me using a royal mail post box or an old red telephone box. that why it has no red relevance to me. so unless ppl know the brand they are like many did going to vote you down for having no red in a challenge stating the main colour being red.
i knew this would be hailed by the valdo. ubique, bvy postumous crowd has no relevance to red to me at all and i gave it a 1, far to predictable you lot.
Well, I'm not so sure about that. I love to express color in black and white, it's not that far fetched. The RadioFlyer is iconic, although I knew it would likely strike a cord primarily with North Americans.

The ability to convey red in an image, as you have, without actually relying on the colour... wow! Brilliant!
Being 23 years old and from Australia, I had no idea what this image was of, and that it is typically a red object, but submitted in black and white. After reading the other comments, I still stand by the low score I gave this, as I didn't get any "red" from this, which is what the challenge asks for. Wrong audience, I guess :)
I could not overstate my dismay at the prevailing reactions to this photograph. People who think like that have no business owning an instrument as powerful as a camera. And that's no idle observation: I mean it.
In a "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoon, Calvin asks his dad about b+w pictures. Dad tells him that the world used to be black and white. When confronted with the fact that the b+w pictures didn't change with the rest of the world, Dad replies "that's because they were color pictures of a black and white world." This was great, forces us to think about what color is and means.
Oh MAN! Had planned on getting back to comment on this during voting.
This was/is my favourite from the challenge. Why? Because of the quality of the image, and the bravery to submit a B&W image for this challenge. The ability to convey red in an image, as you have, without actually relying on the colour... wow! Brilliant!
You may have to be a certain "age" to appreciate this one, and I do. Sort of like a "a color image without color". It speaks to me, lol. (voted earlier)
