I have been itching to do a shot in my make shift studio for a while. Since Cody was born, I haven't had the time to do anything with it. Luckily, we are starting to get him on more of a night time routine, which made this shot possible.
Setup for this is all DIY. I have PVC based light tent, with a big white sheet. The white sheet isn't quite bright enough for my needs in this shot, so I used two sheets of styrofoam (on above and one behind) to help reflect more light. I then used my flash (wirelessly triggered) with a diffuser held up and pointed to the top of the setup. This allowed light to bounce all around and give this a nice even lighting. I purposefully used higher flash power to eliminate reflections of the setup as best I could.
Post processing:
* White balance
* Retouch out various specks in the ornament, tape holding the ornament in place, and part of the setup that still reflected
* Increase exposure
* Increase black point
* Levels to darken the dark spots of the ball and make the white brighter
* Levels to bring out the reflection a bit more
* Dodge the ball to make it even whiter still
* Export as TIFF
* Resize
* Sharpen Edges
* Save as JPEG
