An Ice cave in Vatnajökull ice cap, southern Iceland. Vatnajökull is the largest ice cap in Europe, around 3,100 km³ constanly changing it's formation and shape due to melting of the glaciers. This time I teamed up with the experienced mountaineer and talented photographer Örvar Atli for an adventures winter tour to the southern part of Iceland for a couple of days, searching the glaciers for ice caves and sculptures along with the standard aurora and landscape hunting. It´s pretty hard to photograph the real depth of the ice inside the caves, but looking into the walls is like an endless 3d depth of blue ice. There was also plenty of ash inside this cave, from the recent erupting volcano in Grímsvötn may 2010. The guy at the Gateway happens to be me.
At last, some "safety share"
I'll not recomment anyone to hike into the glaciers without local guiding. We have a recent tragic accident where a photographer died while exploring the glaciers in Iceland.
Cheers, Skarpi

Wow, what a wonderful shot! Congratulations on your blue ribbon! I really hope to visit Iceland someday and it's mostly because of the amazing photos that I see you produce. Wow!
Wow! What a payoff for what sounds like an excellent adventure! Your photography is amazing and does such a fantastic job of showing the artistry of Iceland. Congratulations!
Truly the shot is akin to a portal to another world. A world many of us don't get to see in real life. You captured the glacier beautifully - The inclusion of the person in the shot gives a sense of scale and also plays into the imagery of a portal that one travels to another place. Congrats on your blue - your shot could easily be featured in National Geographic.
Thanks for all your comments and kind words about my work. I just added more detail text on the image.
I'm proud to be able to represent my country in a photograph.
what an absolutely amazing image, great composition and the person shows the immense scale, I'm sure I've seen this somewhere else (1x?), I suspect I'm looking at a ribbon image here, good luck
