Worked on this one for about 3 hours on Sunday. After about 1.5 hours the squirrel finally came down. Once he got up his nerve to check out the flower, he grabbed it and ran into the tree!!
After that, he didn't come back down. 3 hours gone.
I worked on this one starting around 7:45 Monday morning. Had about 3 hours of patience in me.
Same problem as usual -- he'd come up and turn the wrong way.
Then he'd wander off with the flower:
The one time he picked it up, he turned away from me:
I laid it on the railing, hoping he'd pick it up. Although this one wasn't bad, but I didn't like the food by his feet.
But he only picked it up the one time. (and faced the wrong direction!!)
Then I thought about putting it in a container. Though when the container fell over, it startled him, an I think he went to the bathroom on the railing... It was all wet, and there was no water in the vase!

you are amazing .. you nail it every time .. queen of the squirrels that for sure .. hope your 'subjects' are benefiting from their 'labours' ..lol .. congrats so much wendy on another amazing, endearing and wonderful image .. :)
Even your outtakes are wonderful, I do believe this picture is what my dog sees in his little dog dreams at night when he is kicking and howling in his sleep. This squirrel... that flower... and his inability to dine on them both... haunt's his nights.
Wendy, should you ever decide to sell your home, be sure to advertise here first on DPC. The ribbon value of those backyard squirrels will increase your property value exponentially! Congrats! ;-)
Congratulations on the Blue, of course this was a Wendy, but you captured a perfect and original moment in a well used subject.
I think that is much harder than finding a new subject to work with. Great work! A testament to patience.
I have one squirrel that comes down quite close to me (within 6 inches) AFTER I put out seed and hold VERY still. hee hee This is terrific and definitely deserved blue.
Then I thought about putting it in a container. Though when the container fell over, it startled him, an I think he went to the bathroom on the railing... It was all wet, and there was no water in the vase!
I'm looking up the number for PETA in Va. This abuse of our bushy tailed friends must be put to a stop.
Beautiful framing and editing on this one, grats. Another (yawn) blue.
oh, that's funny...when I saw this I thought "Wendy...you have to lay off the peanut butter"!!! Those poor squirrels won't know where to find their own food soon...lol
You really must quit torturing those poor squirrels. What in the world did they ever do to you? Oh. They win you ribbons. But still, making them pee on the railing? Poor things! At least you gave them flowers!
So happy to see this image where it is, it was at the top of my list :-) Thanks for sharing the trials and tribulations of getting to this amazing capture, your patience certainly paid off!
another ribbon!? ... i gotta get me a pet squirrel!
congrats!

i'm a squirrel hunter, and didn't know they ate flowers... seen 'em eat mushrooms, though. did you "sweeten the pot" with anything to make him go for it??
This has got to be Wendy! I recognize the vase, as well as the squirrel (duh!)
So beautifully captured! Excellent horizontal composition! and the frame adds a lot to the composition, too!
What is it with Squirrels. . .am I missing something. Well done shot, appreciate the subject matter relating to the challenge. . .which seems to not be happening much on this one.
Wendy? I'm beginning to think these squirrels are stuffed and you just place them where you want. LOL. If it's not Wendy...consider it a compliment. :) 9
