For another project I made a bar of LED lights. They are all connected to a micro controller so I could independently turn each light on and off at very high speeds.
For this setup I programmed the micro controller to have the outer four lights of the bar stay on. The inner lights were set to pulse on for 10ms and off for 100ms. If I then pull the light bar through the image and rotate it at the same time I get the spirals from the always on lights and the cross bars from the pulsing inner lights.
At first I tried to do the movement by hand but it was very inconsistent and looked horrible. I ended up attaching it to the end of a pipe and connecting a hand drill to the pipe. This let me rotate it at a very consistent speed.
After about 50 attempts I got something I was happy with.
