This is one small slice of the grand view from my mom's cabin on Lake Tyee, WA, near Baker Lake. The North Cascades in WA are just a stunning set of mountains, and several are permanent snowcaps.
My friend has climbed Mt. Shuksan several times.
I was originally annoyed at myself for not bringing my remote release. No star trails for me! So then I had to see what I could capture in my camera's max. exposure of 30s.
I probably overdid the color a bit, and I was wondering whether I overdid the stars when the deadline hit. They're so big because even with only 30 seconds of exposure, I was zoomed in enough that they streaked a bit.
To bring out stars, sharpen them a lot. I think I did that twice. This shot was validated during voting; every star is there, although some are very, very dim.
Here's the original, using the Photoshop Elements defaults to convert from RAW. Mom prefers this one:
Very pleased with the score - highest in almost 3 years. :)
The title is a nod to one of my first DPC entries, also a night shot with mountains and stars:
Starry, Starry Night in the Italian Alps
Note to giantmike: I agree with you about the halo on the tree - I couldn't quite tell if it was an optical illusion. Then I finally realized I'd set "clarity" to +100. That's what created the halo.

Very cool view. I like the different levels of distance used in this photo. One thing that is distracting me a little bit is the halo effect around the tree.
