Wow, what a week! I went out 5 times to shoot for this challenge, as it seems a lot of people did many times. A very difficult challenge, but I did learn my Leica better! That was the point and to learn to see images without putting the camera to your face. I also spent all week shooting with both eyes open. With my M9, it has almost become second nature now. I found I had to train my brain to decide which image in the viewfinder to give importance. Once I figured that out, it's a great system. Keeping the left eye open allowed me to watch the action better and then choose the right time to release the shutter. WIth my Canon gear, I always get cockeyed vision from keeping my left eye closed, but I tried keeping my left eye open with my 1D and it was almost impossible to see the image in the view finder. So, each camera has it's good points and not so good points. I'm happy I am learning my M9 more lately. But, I'll keep the 1D around to make sure I can get my macro shots.
So, I saw the skateboarders coming, then I saw the sign, and then I rushed to get to a good vantage point and I took 3 shots of which this one was the best. I am convinced that HCB did the same thing, was aware of an impending image and put himself into the right place at the right time to get the shot. Only he had film and could not be 100% certain he had actually captured what he saw. He must have been very excited when he finally viewed the prints. I wonder how many of his shots did not produce anything though. Probably more when he was younger, but the ratio would have decreased as he got more experienced with his camera.
What a hard time choosing which image to enter, then I had a hard time choosing a name for it!
