Looks like a strobe light, but it's not. I bought a little fan for $1.00 and attached a cardboard circle on it and cut out a hole approximately 2 x 2 inches on one side. Placed the spining circle in front of the lens. Used a 500W light source. The subject is my cute wife who suffered through many takes to get it just right. The little black line on the right is a crease in the material I used for the background. It was driving me crazy, so I ironed it out. I never got a satisfactory shot after that. Sharpened a bit and darkened the colours in Paint Shop Pro.

This is a neat shot. I think you had a very creative idea and did a nice job of executing it. There are lots of ways to achieve this same effect also... you can wave a piece of black paper in front of the lens as well :) The wow factor in this photo definitely lies in the 'how'd he do that?'
There are several ways you could have solved your background issue as well... primarily, your model needed to be further away from the background. She is too close to it for an F8 / 2.5" exposure to not include detail of the surroundings. I believe that F4 at 2.5" would have improved the overall image by brightening up your subject a little more :) the color is weak and there is a hint of the tungsten yellow glow that may have been avoidable with either white balance settings or some level adjustments.
congratulations! and awesome idea for a "strobe-light". must add that to the growing list of things to try that i'm learning from other dpcers. thanks :)
Great job, I was even more amazed with your winning picture after I read your account of how it was produced. You must have a very patient and enduring wife. I am especially pleased to see a fellow Canadian achieve such a high acknowledgment two weeks in a row, you must be delighted. Particularly, when you consider the high level of competition at the DPC site. Keep up the good work.
Wow, thanks guys for the generous votes and comments, again. I'll try to post one of those "How'd they do that" things later this week. My little "invention" (see my Photographer's comments) is really fun to work with.
I'll also post a link to some more varations of my shot here.
The only thing that would improve this shot is if the arm trails were a little bolder. This is excellent. I love the symmetry. It is a very well done shot. - Inspzil
Great idea and great execution. Is this a self portrait as well? I would have liked to see the face. Black space below thighs could have been cropped out. It draws your eye away from the subject.
Very cool! was this done with a strobe? It looks fabulous, that must have taken a lot of practice to get right! I love how the legs fade out into the background. Overall well done!

Commentary:
You have done a very good Job here. I like this shot. Good Portrait and I will tell you why. You take notice to the little things. I like the fact that the back of the hands are not showing. You broke the wrists at every stop. Obviously you know Portraits. The light could have been a little lighter but you did get your point across. Wonderful.
This picture should be close to #1, but I don't understand the broken part. I think it should be continous or circular, because this picture demonstrates the continuity of motion that there is a point A before point B.
Definitely one of my favorites this week! Very well done -- I'm amazed at how well you were able to evenly space her arms. Did you use a strobe light for this? I'll be curious to learn more. - 10!
I changed this vote from an 8 to a 9... this is very nice. If I were forced to cahnge something I might have had her wear a yellow shirt.... to give a sun-like effect... or maybe wear some fake tattoos on her arms to give more character to the fluttering arms... actually nevermind me, I'm rambling. :D
This is wonderful. The sleeves of her shirt in motion give her a winged appearance. I love the pose. With her head down, I feel the emphasis is on the motion and not her face. The red shirt is perfect. A definite 10.
Very well done! Gave it a 9 for meeting the challenge topic and for it's idea. Could be a little brighter though, but still one of my very few favorits.
