It's been a brutal winter in the city of Philadelphia. Muddy city streets, bleak skies and fading sunlight drain the will to exist. After a recent snow storm my friend and I decided to live a little. At 4 AM we left the city behind. Armed with camera bags, tripods, boots, warm clothes and two cups of coffee we sped down an empty Atlantic City expressway. Anxiety and anticipation mixed with fear and kept us awake. The promise that the sun would rise was the only certainty. Two hours later we reached the deserted town of Ocean City. We watched the first pink hues emerge as we pulled up to the snow kissed beach. In the distance the silhouette of an ancient dilapidated pier grasped our attention. In a whirl of excitement and urgency for the perfect light we grabbed our gear and ran to the ocean. The sun was rising quickly and the colors shifted with every passing moment. There was still time for a few long exposures. I remember dropping to my knees and feeling the sand and cold water while I fumbled with the tripod and heavy pack. We shot the pier from every angle.. climbed the rocks.. took pictures of each other jumping in the surf.. We must have looked crazy to the man walking his dog in the distance. It was pure bliss. Every breath was sunlight ocean sand laughter friendship.. we were alive..
