I put a crazy colored gradient map on this first. Then used the standard flip/blend process followed by a black/white gradient map layer.
That seems like a lot to end up with a black/white version of a b/w image, but it looks much better than it did without the gradient maps.

Especially in the thumbnail view this looked a lot like a piece of silver jewelry to me -- nice effect!
