I reckon you'd need to train your eye a lot to see the potential that you can achieve from a shot like the original.
Congrats on the first page finish. I looked at this and the first thing I thought was this is one of Robt's for sure. Then I thought the color just didn't look right. So I Googled it. Sure enough there was a Bass River down Cape. But still I doubted.

wonderful sky here, you could have maybe cropped a little bit more off the top and given the photo a slightly more panoramic feel, it feels a bit square to me but its still a great photo, well done.
