 I started with an unwrapped candy cane on a piece of white card stock. I macro'd it, cropped it then messed with in in PSE8.
I added "underpainting" filter, "ocean glass" filter, red/green gradient layer at -45 degrees and 40% opaque, then I distorted the image . . . resized, saved for web and voila; a candy cane explosion.

Wow those colors are so great! To me this looks like a planar projection of a Christmas tree ornament:).

Well seen, and executed. Makes me think of the bubbles left by seals - if they swim through coloured water, that is.
