 I swear I don't know why I bother entering.

I really do enjoy shooting for challenges. I had a great morning shooting down at Cabrillo Beach, watching the birds; watching the water hit the breakwater; watching the clouds as they moved across. Played with the wide angle, and I do so love playing with the wide angle. We'd had a downpour (rare 'round these parts!) early that morning, but it had started to clear out a bit. Lovely morning, really, but a tad breezy. Anyway, spent a good two hours (and two bucks for parking) shooting a lot of frames. Here's one of them. Give it your best 5.5. Thanks.

Editing is a preset in Lightroom, checking to make sure there's no vignette; finished in Photoshop.

I left a detailed comment during the Challenge because it's a wonderful shot. To me, it's worth working on a little more. The curvatures of the water and sand areas are terrific. You may not have ranked highly in the Challenge itself, but with some tweaking, it would be be print-worthy, imo.

I totally emphasize with your sense of discouragement - judging results sure confuse the heck out of me most weeks. But, keep working on it - the Challenge still presents a good learning experience. Regardless of where you place still offers you the opportunity to compare your picture against others - what appeals and why. Learn from that.

The pier and its end seem too centered. Had you cropped a third off the top of sky and then off the right side, I think it would have been a stronger composition (and the blown-out clouds in the upper right corner would not be there.)
