Yes, these definitely are real! The effect that a lot of people have commented on is, I think, caused by the fact that it was quite a foggy morning (most Autumn mornings are in this area), and very, very still.
here is another photo taken a very short time later: to show it wasn't a museum display...
I wonder if I would have done better if I had cropped in on the deer and not shown their environment?

Add me to the list of people who thought it looked like a museum display. I didn't vote though, so no harm no foul I guess. That really is the most peculiar natural lighting. It's like a potlight from above shining perfectly on them.
It does look like a display lol. Wow what a great job. I personally like the environment. The tree in the distance makes for such a beatiful backdrop. Congrats on the top 10!
Beautiful photo with such clarity. I like the faded tree at the background. It makes the photo look a bit surreal...as if it was a painting in a fairy book. 10
Lovely scene, but... to be honest it looks like an exhibit. If not this is an incredible capture. Not voting on this one.
Have changed my mind and will vote, as upon closer inspection it certainly appears to be the real deal. Excellent depth of field, great framing with the trees. Sharp, yet soft enough to convey the hazy morning feeling. Extremely well done.
Great photo! The tree in the background hidden by what looks like fog, the great amount of sharpness, and the good subjects all combine to make this spectacular.
Good choice Sara, they both look like they're on the look out for each other. The backdrop's nice as well, shows it's their natural surroundings and adds interest.
