the dayglow colors agains the b&w are not working for me in this shot at all. Seems inappropriate to the subject matter

I can't help but feel this is a shot of 9 (possibly 10) posts and you've really stretched things in post processing with the pink and contrast reduction on the right. If you had had the opportunity to recompose the shot then that would have given you a better starting point.
