I gotta tell ya - that dog is such a ham! What?!?! You want me to look off into the distance with a wistful look - no way! I'm going to look at you and play! There is the serious and the playful side of friendship and this captures it nicely.
Putting the technical aspects aside as this photo transcends those - it tells a wonderful story - I love that the woman isn't looking at the camera but the little dog is - his/her expression is comical. Best friends indeed.
nice shot, with good lighting, could use a bit of work in processing by lightening the woman's face, and possibly the horse's just a hair as well as toning down the sharpening just a bit IMHO. There are a few distracting flecks that distract as well.
