For this challenge, I decided to reproduce a surrealistic shot originally created by the french photographer Philippe Ramette. It is called "The Balcony", and won several prizes.
This was quite EPIC to shoot.
- First I had to buy the wood and build the structure.
- Then, I traveled a first time to a lake a few kilometers away from my house, and measured the depth of the water at various locations, in order to build the feet of the structure with appropriate lengths.
- After that, I cut the feet at home, and transported everything back to the lake. Believe me, this thing is heavy! My wife and I had a hard time installing it.
- Shoot!
Was a very fun day :-)

Christopher, Congrats on the ribbon and PB. Great choice and a brilliant execution.
Looking at the efforts you have spent on this, I feel the score should have been 8+. Many, like I did would have thought that the wooden structure already existed there.
Amazing! Congratulations on a very deserved, and it appears hard earned, first place finish. It is quite appropriate that more people voted 10 on this, than any other score. Simply amazing!
Excellent, stellar, magnificent and brilliant and I was just talking about the work you did making the prop. :) The photo is beyond my abilities to comment on so I will just applaud you - and congratulate you on your so well deserved ribbon.
When I first looked at this photo, I spent several minutes staring at it. What an amazing job! All that hard work certainly paid off! I would love to see this as a print! It is superb!
Yayyyy!! Go Christophe! Go Jawbones!! Really awesome picture, kudos on the setup, glad that you and your wife have so much fun with the challenges:D I am glad to see your hard work paid off.
I would add that I started photography 1 year ago due to my wife working almost every Saturday, which means I have a full day every week that I can affect to my shots... I am aware this is a great advantage over persons that have kids or family to take care of, which also explains why I am able to fool around with wood sticks ;-)
After seeing the Jawbones profile page, I think it would be more appropriate to say Go Gyaban! JK :-) you are all very talented
Gyaban joined DPC less than 4 months ago, got a red on his 1st free study entry, then a blue... and (so far) has grabbed 5 ribbons during DPL2
5 out of his team's top 6 percentiles are his
Portraiture, indoor setup, outdoor setup, landscape, color, b&w, he's done it all with tons of talent
..... what an outstanding performance!
I don't know if that is a record for DPL, but I am sure it will hardly be matched in the future.
Huge congrats Christophe!!!
Surprised this did not reached a 8+ score. It really deserved it.
How did you manage to get those concentric ripples? I think that is a major element in your amazing composition.
Thank you :-)
The concentric ripples were achieved by me stepping into the water a few seconds before shooting the photo. This is why my trousers are wet, and also the reason why I decided to not wear shoes.
Surprised this did not reach a 8+ score. It really deserved it.

Excellent! Absolutely LOVE your interpretation of the original. Fabulous idea and so pleased it did well for you after all the work you put into it. HUGE congrats on your blue and your new PB, Christophe.
Congratulations Christophe! I hope people will realize all the effort you went to with this image. You spent a lot of time building that platform yourself and then captured it all superbly. So deserving of the blue!
congrats in advance...those fantastic concentric ripples around the subject make the photo ....this has to be an 8+ finish...it deserves it. Looking forward to find out the final score...another 10 from me.
Marvelous! I cannot believe you would have constructed the "balcony" just for this challenge. The sky, the water, the perfectly reflected fringe of trees - I smell a winner here, and I've only just started looking at the entries. Incredible preparation and set up. An instant fave
Back to marvel at this photo. To me it is even better than the original. My pick for the blue.
Excellent and brilliantly interesting! That must have taken not only a lot of thought and set up but, also a great deal of strength for the model to hold himself up like that! I hope he was well rewarded! :)
So so cool. What is the structure that makes up the balcony? Wonderful treeline and color of the water is lovely.
If you try this again, consider getting the camera a little closer to the water, and tilting a bit more up. Great shot.
Such commitment!! A fantastic result too! I haven't really looked at the other yet but this is absolutely fabulous (as distinct from relatively fabulous - no need to compare). Blue ribbon -surely.
Wow!! The effort the tone - everything is so fantastical (is that a word?) Well - it is just amazing. Congrats on another ribbon - you and Shermy I think will be featured together. Fantastic!!
