When we moved here 6 years ago, my husband called up one morning when he was on his way to work. "There are cygnets! You have to come see them."
We knocked on a door in the neighborhood and asked if we could go in their backyard to see the swans. The told us all about them. Their names were Louis & Serena (the swans, not the people :) and they had babies most years, but hardly any survive to maturity. There's a large number of snapping turtles, some are done in by geese, etc.
Fast forward 5 years, and Serena was hit by a car and killed. It was incredibly sad seeing Louis swim around alone.
This year, another swan appeared. And babies came awhile later. It was the biggest batch of cygnets yet -- 11!!
The hardest part is driving by the pond each day and watching the numbers go down, down, down.
This is the last surviving cygnet out of the original 11. He's still there, but I'm always afraid to look when going by the pond.

Top 10, you can't complain about that! (Well, if you wanted to be unreasonable, you could complain that it's not a ribbon!) Nice strong showing Wendy! You are the bird-lady.
