Taken at Dry Run Creek just below the Hatchery at the Norfork River in Northern Arkansas. Many trout gather there trying to jump up the falls, plus the brown are in their spawning run now. focal length 107

COMPOSITION- CONTENT The content of the picture is great, this could really be a good picture for a fishing magazine. Eyes are definitely drawn to the fish and the light on the fish helps it stand out in the picture. The rule of thirds has been applied here and this adds to the shot. After the fish, the eyes are drawn to the river bank, and although overall the composition is nice, I think that the river bank isnt needed here. I agree with some of the comments here, a closer crop would have helped the composition, making the fish larger in the frame and excluding some of the extra detail. I think that the idea of making this a vertical crop is a good one, cut off the left of the picture, including the grass, a little bit off the right for balance and then concentrate on the fish, the falling water and then also the bank would add to the framing.
BACKGROUND
I think a lot that I have said in the composition applies here. Although beautiful the background overpowers the point of the picture, being the fish. Decrease the size of the background and the fish will "jump out" even more! LOL.
CAMERA WORK-TECHNICAL The fast shutter speed here is great, it captures the fish cleanly and in focus, great work! The lighting on the fish and water is lovely, also the background lighting is clear. I would imagine that the water here is pretty dark, hence the "dark" comments. However if you had increased contrast, I think that the water would have got blown out.
DIGITAL PROCESSING-TECHNICAL I think that you could play around with the contrast a little here, as some people have suggested, try cutting out the background and adding a bit more light. Though, to be honest Ifeel that the lighting is very good here, the water has got a nice clean glow to it.
MY OPINION This is a great capture and a vey beautiful setting, I think some more cropping would enhance this shot a lot. Perfect timing! I hope that this critique helps!
Nice catch! Looks like light was in short supply here, which is a shame - the photo is a bit too dark. I guess a longer shutter would have resulted in a long blur instead of a fish though! A tighter crop may have improved the composition, as it is the fish is taking up too little of the shot. Well done, a great moment to capture.
I love nature shots and this one definetly documents an event. The lighting is excellent and the split second capture is perfect. I wonder how a different crop would be. I'm not sure I like the little bit of land showing above. I took the liberty of editing a copy in PS to illustrate what I am talking about. If you'd like to see it feel free to email me. I do realize my opinion is just that...only an opinion. All in all I really like this very much and am scoring high. 8 Good luck in the challenge. Grayce
I imagine you took alot of shots to get the fish. Good job. And thank you for passing on a more boring title. Had it had a title like "facing the challenge" or some such rot, it would have done more poorly.
What a great capture! Very good idea -- must have taken forever to wait on. My only thought is that a tighter crop might put more focus on the fish itself -- seems a little heavy on the foreground. Maybe a vertical picture would give a better sense of height -- like the fish has a higher leap to make? Great photo! muckpond
Great shot. Good job. Like the bank being the top of the picture. A one of a kind for sure. A little harsh, but otherwise good. PTL8 Just catching that fish in mid jump moves this to a 9.
