I'm guessing in part this is a negative of an infrared photo? It's a technique I've been thinking about. Nicely done, like a pastel painting.

Very painterly effect, which ordinarily I don't care for, but I think this effect in this challenge works extremely well. Almost like an Oriental watercolor ... well, duotone variation, anyway.
