Photographer’s Notes On Sunday, I looked at my calendar for the next day and found a “blank day.” I checked the weather forecast … a clear, dry, KAVU kind of day was forecast. I checked the road conditions and they were “bare and wet” all the way to Paradise. Paradise in this case was the Paradise visitor center at Mt. Rainier, which is at about 5,400, on a mountain whose elevation is 14, 411 feet. I checked avalanche danger … low. “I’m going! Want to go?” I said to my wife. She said something unprintable because she had to work. In spite of that, it was a stunning day.
The photo here is of the Inn at Paradise. There have been about 350 inches of snow so far this year. About 100 inches remain. In this photo, you can see the snow up to the eves of the inn.
I liked the repeating forms of the dormers and the perspective as they fall away from me. The Inn is about 50 meters long and you could see most of its length from here without the snow.
I’ll be lucky to break six with this … but I enjoyed the day and wanted to share it.

Greetings from the critique club. This is a very striking photo if anything because of the depth of the snow!
Composition As the challenge heading dictates, the perspective is certainly a key element of this photograph. It is not often one gets so close to the eves of a roof to photograph such a distinct line. It was an excellent choice to photograph it on an angle. It creates a leading line to the sky. I like the placement of the chimney, right at the top, again leading to the sky. An excellent perspective. The score your received and placement is pretty good. One of the main issues with this photo is that it is lacking any striking feature or shape that you see in the top 10.
Technical There is not much to say on the technicality of the photo. Your exposure was proper as there are no blow highlights in the sky and the exposure is balanced well with the shadows. A flash would help add a little more depth to the photograph. Another possibility would be to underexpose the sky and rely on fill flash from different angles to light the structure and snow. I'm sure that would have been difficult given the conditions.
