 A few hundred metres before the end of Route 119, also known as the Nikko Road. At the end is the entrance to the Toshogu Shrine environs.
There are lots of monkeys in the uninhabited areas around Nikko, so it's part of the local folklore. After all, the Three Wise Monkeys are there on the Sacred Horse Stable within the shrine grounds and they feature prominently in souvenir shops.
Cold wind, though overall it has been quite a milder winter (so far) than usual in this part of Japan.

just my opinion but the flash caused a dark spot in the middle of the pic - what I see is light - dark - light and the angle is somehow off for this shot; I do however like the monkey. do you have any outtakes of this?
