napkin puppet. do not try this at home. only the most committed idiot should attempt something like this.
crop, calculations to b/w (multiply two red channels), USM
you do see the old man looking down into his childhood, don't you?
====================
got some comments on the bar. That's a support bar for a lampshade. The old man is looking down into a lamp. I know I could have cropped that all away, but I liked revealing the illusion. I know, I'd be a terrible magician.

The first time i looked, i did not see it. (but wasn't voting either). Now, however, I am wondering how in the world I missed it. It does look like a little old man.
Ooh, I see him, I see him! I also see where and why some would like to see the bottom third and left third cropped. Would work, from a technical standpoint, but would also take the posthumous-ness from the shot. And that would never do.
The lighting and glare is a teeny bit strong but also helps to illuminate the face. Can't argue with the settings, though someone I know would say to put the camera on a tripod, stop waayyyyy down and shoot for 30 seconds or some such tomfoolery :-) The bar is a little distracting but honestly, I only noticed it cause others mentioned it. Composition daring as he is almost leaning out of frame, but makes the shot all the more interesting imho.
Artistically, a lovely and fun piece of work and very well done, lighting up the angles and planes of the face and catching a hunched-over, studious pose. Not sure if I see him peering into his childhood per se, but I see him peering into something and boy does he look pissed!
Great work, you really do deserve a posty blue for this.
I think it's time you give yourself a posthumous ribbon! This is so very creative an humorous! Try to repost taking some of the comments into account just for kicks!
Actually, my dad made napkin puppets. All the time... I see the old dude. I like the offered librarian conceit very much. I can handle childhood as well, never having quite left mine. Well seen, as usual :-)
You got robbed. This was one of my 10's. Wonderful play of light and shadow. I wasn't sure what he was supposed to looking at, however. It looked to me like a librarian poring over an old book.
I think I really would have liked to have seen this without all the extra stuff in the bottom 1/3. I think the face and lighting is intriguing but it has to compete with that extra paper - which to me does not really add too much to the scene.
I'm sorry, but I can't see how this meets the challenge at all. If it does, it's so far out of the box it has me baffled. Can't see a smile or a frown no matter where I look.
Took me a minute or two to see the face... Very imaginative and it does emit some emotion with the bowed down look. However, I think the tonal range of the shot is fairly blown with too bright highlights and too dark shadows.
