I put a pot of water on the stove, brought it up to a boil and put black backdrop in. the lighting is on camera SB 600 with Gary Fong diffuser.

Steps:
RAW conversion
Highpass filter set to overlay at %100 Opacity
Curves
Brightness/Contrast
Gradient Map at 43% Opacity
Border
