I had to travel for a few hours in the mountains region of Peru a little after this and the Deep DOF challenges had been announced.
The D700 body and the 17-35mm/2.8 was all I took, expecting to shoot a landscape for the Deep DOF challenge.
After several landscape shots, nothing great, we passed through a small village and saw a mud-brick house approx. 100 feet from the road, with a huge drum vessel by the door, and two kids standing in front looking at our car as we passed by. The idea came up and had it done after making sure the kids and their family fell comfortable with the camera. The boy was hugging the girl and/or holding her hand most of the time, so the only special request was the kiss :-) which he happily executed in the way you see in the image.
Shot from approx. 15 feet away, with a heavy crop in mind (not an issue at 640px) to avoid the perspective distortion of the wide angle. The distance reduced the chance to add some fill light with the built-in flash. The slight lack of light on the subjects could not be fixed under basic editing rules.
Here a couple of shots taken from a shorter distance (with noticeable fill light and perspective distortion)
Thanks again.

A lovely story to go with the picture. I really love the picture you chose over the outtakes, which are sweet, but don't have the spontaneity the other does. Beautiful colors and another well deserved ribbon. Congratulations!
Wonderful choice of the stage. I like the framing with the door, and the tricky and funny expression of both is priceless. Excellent pp. Sure I will see this in top 5
Kids kissing kinda creeps me out. It certainly meets the challenge and the photo is technically perfect as far as I can see. I have no choice but to score it at 10 and I'm sure it will be in the top 10 if not a ribbon winner.
