Perhaps placing a watch by the stick would have given a feeling of waiting. This just says "wait" (and has a sense of anticipation) because of the blocks.

a second light source would eliminate the shadows that take away from your carefully composed shot.

The elements in the photograph are well placed and well lit. Even with the blocks spelling it out, the "waiting" message doesn't come across with much oomph.
