I like the color and the lighting. Very strong contrasts, almost a still life painting. One problem I had with voting this challenge, however, was the description "create a scene using only fruits and vegetables." My idea of a scene is something more than a still life, but I am seeing many straightforward food shots in this challenge, without what I consider to be a scene involving it. I have been giving such entries a 5. It may be my own interpretation that is faulty, so I will not give them a lowball vote, but I can't give them the higher votes either. I was ready to put this entry in the same category, except that your title pointed out a fitting subtlety that I had not noticed right off, so it got a 6 from me.
Well, I was hoping for more of a Veggie Tales photo like from the cartoon. This is certainly no cartoon but to me, a rather very, very good photo. It does look like an 'intimate' moment. Bumping the score up to 9.
I was bothered by another image in this challenge that had a very dark background like this because I felt it was too much darkness, but I don't get that feeling with this image. I wonder why? I think it might be because there isn't as much separation between the non-black parts. I like this image a lot. The composition works nicely.
