Same location as my "Trees II" entry. Shot about 5 minutes after the first, when the sun had risen a touch more and the clouds had shifted a bit.
This is a 3 exposure HDR, shot about 1 stop apart. My original intention was to try and get the sun to be a nice clear orange disk. I didn't achieve that, but I managed to get a really interesting criss-cross pattern in the clouds.
Pre-challenge notes:
Probably won't go over with everyone, but I think this has a different and interesting enough look to get into the high 5's.
Post challenge notes:
I'm sure that after my trees entry ribboned, this was easily identified as mine. I found K10Dguy's story comment to be particularly interesting, as I had described the trees entry as looking like a nuke was going off just over the horizon.
I knew this treatment would not be to everyone's liking, and it did about as hoped for.

The sun came up on that fateful morning as it had come up a billion times before. However, on this day, it shone down upon an earth that was forever changed. Forever different. On this morning was the morning after a destruction had been wrought that had been so severe that it had left nothing alive on the face of it outside a few scattered pockets of dry and withered grasses.
Nothing, that was, but a single tree. Against all odds, and against all possibility did that tree still stand, while all around it was pure and utter wasteland, brought about by a species that never embraced the planet they had found themselves upon, and had finally initiated a final act that should have scorched and annihilated that globe beyond repair.
But that was not to be, for while the rest of the earth was sitting in scorched and damaged injury, there stood that tree.
As the sun rose, a cool and healing breeze began, and the leaves rustled, and a few pods opened up within its branches, and it began to seed...
If you had just moved a few feet to the right... then again. Maybe you didn't want to line up the sun with the tree...
Great shot with nicely saturated colors. Good distinct shape in the silhouette. Too bad about the smaller tree. (I suppose taking an axe to it was out of the question) :)
A good solid image that is crisp, sharp and properly framed and composed - a technical success in every way. From an artistic standpoint, it is an intersting image but of less than universal appeal. A good entry into the challenge.
Gorgeous sunset and shapes, however the photo feels ever so slightly lopsided for me. I think it's that the strong and simple central composition makes me want the sun to fit into that frame and be centered as well.
