I had this tree planned for some time now, and this challenge was of course a perfect reason to photograph it. And it's great that it is in advanced so I can try HDR! I had a hard time choosing my favorite shot, and went with this one in the end. I'm not sure if it's ideal because it's in portrait, but i really like the transition from green&healthy bottom to dark and apocalyptic top. And the bird on top branch is phenomenal, though I doubt it will be noticed easily.
I shot this in raw and created a pseudo-hdr in photomatix, tone-mapped using details enhancer. The result then went to photoshop, slightly rotated and cropped, a bit of curves, resized, usm, border, save for web.
