 Didn't have a lot of time as my daughter has an important dance performance tonight. I brought her to the theater this afternoon and she forgot stuff so I had to drive back home to get if for her (it's a half-hour drive). I bought some cheap yellow fabric, my son had the yellow t-shirt, and I shot in my backyard. I set the white balance using a white sheet because I really wanted to get accurate color. I did nothing to the image except re-size and dodge it to bring out some highlights.

I wish the folds weren't in the sheet but I didn't have a lot of time to iron it. :D

You can always iron the sheet in post-processing. I do it all the time and it's really effective! Clone stamp, about 50-60% opacity.

I have to respectively disagree with you here. I set the white balance in my camera manually from a sheet of white paper held near the subject. The colors are quite true to the original scene.

The background is to wrinkly for me. The white balance is way off. I don't much care for the lighting and the colors. The banana blends in with the surroundings to much. I don't much care for the look on his face either. Hmmm...I didn't vote on this and if I did I would have given it a 4. Sorry, but it really isn't as great a shot as some of the others.

The best way to learn how to take a photo is to look at your photo and critisize it yourself. What can you change to make it better? What about composition, lighting and focus? Look at other portraits and see how they did theirs and learn from it. Experiment. Take more then 20 shots.

Don't give up. Keep shooting! :-)

Well focused, colorful picture. The yellow color of the back drape clashes with the yellow of the banana and shirt which go well together. Also, the drape is very wrinkled which really steals the eye.
