I thought I'd have some fun with "light painting" for this challenge (I've never actually done one of these seriously with any intent actually). The red light is a laser pointer I swept below the air filter; the spot is a quick Mag Lite burst. Lens used was the stock 18-70 AF-S Nikkor at 56mm (frame is cropped).

This is an interesting subject to light and you've captured some nice highlights and shadows. I don't much care for the centered composition or the looking down P.O.V. It kind of seems to be just floating there.
Neat subject. At first - my eyes are drawn to the out-of-focus elements in the background - but then - I am drawn to the forground in-focus part. Nice color gradation.
Dang - this was a Benzene Ring when I studied chemistry. Kind of like the effect, but don't find much of great interest in the shot. DOF helps to give some idea of the three-dimensionality of it, but works against any visual 'magic' for me.
