It was my turn to borrow the infared camera in class. I was supposed to have it for a day and a half, but it was completely pouring rain outside on the first day. I tried to take pics from inside my car or under overhangs, but there wasn't enough infared light out :( Then the next day it was off and on showers, so I decided to drive to where I could see breaks in the clouds. This is in the city of Woodside, CA.
A bit about Woodside (according to the "all-knowing" Wikipedia, lol) :
-it is one of the wealthiest communities in the world and has the highest percapita population of Billionaires.
-It is a small city (about 5,300 people) compared to neighboring cities like Redwood City which has a population of 79,000
-Many famous people have homes in Woodside including Steve Jobs of Apple, Shirley Temple, Michelle Pfeiffer, Neil Young, and Koko the Gorilla :)
-"Bicentennial Man" starring Robin Williams was filmed there as well as "The Wedding Planner," "The Game," "George of the Jungle," etc.
-Woodside has one of the highest percapita amount of Horses in the U.S. There is an estimated 1 horse per every 1 person.
On a personal level, I find Woodside very facinating because it is so close to where I live but so very very different. My city of San Carlos is only 15 mins away, but by appearances you would think they were 300 miles apart. San Carlos looks a lot like any other suburban area of San Francisco; small streets with mostly small houses cramped together with about 30,000 people, in a mostly concrete area. Woodside on the other hand is green with long and very straight streets lined sparsley with mansions and ranches, and only a few small markets and restaurants where you are as likely to see horses going down the street as cars and bicycles. It has a very small town feel and a majority of the land is forested with Redwood and Oak trees...something you might see closer to Yosemite than San Francisco. If I EVER win the lotto or come into a bunch of money, that is the first place I'm heading to.
Anyhoo, I had the infared camera and was driving down a road I had remembered seeing horses by. These horses are usually out in a large field, but lucky me came right as a nearby school was getting out. As I drove by, I noticed the kids pulling out the plants that were just beyond the horses reach and feeding ot to them as they walked by. I was glad that they were going for the grassy treats because I had been planning to use my L lens which isn't quite as sharp as my wider angle lenses. So I just started taking pics and petting them as they came up to the fence, which is how I got this shot. Later on though, I decided to do some funnier shots of this horse reaching for and eating the grass I was giving it. THe resulting expressions were pretty hilarious (but not technically good), especially when I accidentally stuck the grass in the horse's nostril when it had its teeth showing, which I didn't realize til I later looked back at my images. That one is my screensaver now :p I will post it soon.

I honestly thought this would score lower (5.4) but after seeing the comments I received, maybe I should have hoped for higher :) Thanks |
