I can't remember If i added a description to this pic when I submitted it, so i'll add it now... this is just like a pic I did a couple months ago (you may remember it) I always wanted to re-do it because I knew that I could doa better job at it... I was just waiting for a reason, and the Language challenge seemed like a PERFECT time!!! so here it is... I have a D90, but I needed a Flash sync speed of 1/500 sec, so I had to use my D40 (luckily I just picked one up last week for a little backup camera) I used my nikon 55mm MF macro lens that I got on ebay for $30 WITH a nikon FM camera... this lens is one of Nikon's SHARPEST lenses!!! and MF is usually better than AF for macro work... for lighting, there is a SB-800 on the right of the camera with a garry fond lightsphere with a SC-29 cord to the camera, and using nikon's wireless flash system (?CLS?) I had a SB-600 on the left side to help light the background and do a bit of fill light on the left side of the cable... This shot is quite tricky... about 4 hours hunched over my kitchen sink trying to get the water to flow just right so that it would run down the right part of the cable, drip of the right part and flow at a constant, but VERY slow rate so that the drips have time to build up and then fall is little spheres as the one in the pic is... it took about 4 hours to get it all setup right, then anther 30 min and 50 shots to perfect my timing, then once that was all done, I was able to get this little sphere drop in almost all the pics I took, so I jsut had to work on framing and angling the camera (which was hand held by the way) just right so that the drip was smack dab in the middle of the black area WITH a nice refraction in the drip...
LOTS of work, but I think it turned out quite well =)
My scores are usually off, so I don't know how the pic is doing, but there are already three favorites, so I figure that I should add some setup pics because they will be appreciated =)

Wow, what an amazing shot - to think of it in the first place was fantastic enough, and then to go to all that effort to set it up! Well deserved on your blue, congratulations, a stunning concept well executed.
I really like this shot, even though it's "yet another one using the through the drop" technique. I always like it when people use a known technique and make it their own. Very nice contrast, and insanely perfect water droplet.
Did you have to meter manually with that lens? I have a D40 and as far as I know, metering is limited to AF-S lenses, and focusing to internal-focus lenses (doesn't have an AF motor?).
See my comment 4 steps down and you'll see what I thought of the drop.

Excellent execution of the concept. To be honest though, I'm a bit disapointed to see a water drop shot at the top of a language competition. After all, why would water of all things be included in a shot with an ethernet cable. I know its cool but other than that it really doesn't make much sense. Not the first time I've felt like that. We've all got our water shots on this site, at least yours is way better than most. Congrats on the ribbon
Man this is just amazing strobist how to :)
David Hobby should be proud of you :) Very well done and thanks allot for the how to :)
Very well done again :)

You are my hero! Not only do you post a remarkable image, but you actually share everything about how to do it. You are very generous and talented
Thanks
Debbi
Congratulations on your first place finish. I can't understand how someone could give you 1's or 2's since this language is evident in every aspect of our lives, only if you are living in the 21st century. Excellent finish...
I knew this should be to produce and, by reading your description, I should have scored it 12 instead of only 10.
Much well deserved blue, congratulations!
2 for 2 eh? This one is lit better than your earlier attempt but the background is weaker. If you go for the trifecta try and do it without revealing the magician's hand (i.e. don't show the source of the reflected image). It is possible.
I like this image. Always a question whether the numbers at the back or in the water should be the right way up? The light on the plug is a bit harsh, giving a glare to that part of the photo. Other than that, a great submission
Well, out of the first 18 shots I have seen in this challenge, yours is the best by a mile. Most of the others are all not very good attempts at body language. Good luck. no vote.
I love this picture. It is easily one of my favorites and therefore got my highest rating within this competition. One small gripe. the picture to me says that the binary is flowing through the cable, and when unplugged, it drips a little out like a gas hose at the pump. But there is liquid on the outside of the plug. that's it. thanks.
Ok... the only reason the water drop is in there is to show off the whole 'picture in waterdrop' thing that's been done a billion times already. Usually it adds to the picture or is there for a purpose, but here it seems like a cheap attempt to score points from newbies who haven't seen it before.
The picture is technically accomplished, but going for the cheap vote with the water drop is something I find quite disappointing and bordering on the insulting.
Like I said, the picture is nice. It's actually nice enough without going for the water drop. All it needs is a purple sunset put on a computer screen behind a wine glass filled with water and you've summed up DPC's cheesiness.
now i'm going to imagine little water droplets filled with 1s and 0s flowing through cat5 cables whenever i'm on a computer, which is all the time btw. very cool.
also made me laugh because it brought to mind ted stevens' series of tubes debacle. voted 0b1010 :P
