I put this in the Hidden Gems challenge because it was the one I wanted to have on the record. This shot was my tipping-point, after that I was obsessed with photography.
For the challenge, I did a new edit, with the skills I have today. It is presented on its side--if you rotate it CCW 90 deg, you will see it 'right side up.' It is a group of pansies in a small white porcelain vase, posed on a sheet of foamcore covered with aluminum foil because it was raining, I was shooting outside. When I saw how the aluminum foil reflected the light, I quickly covered another piece of foamcore with aluminum foil, & held it with one hand to make a 'wall,' to reflect even more light. The two pieces of foamcore ended up at an extreme angle that left the subject gently sandwiched between them. I held the lens against the top piece, inside the sandwich. On the left is the group of flowers, on the right is part of the reflection. The water drops are the rain.
I discovered with this shot that a photograph could look like a painting. I like how this makes me think of ice. And pansies & violas are my favorites.
Later that summer I covered several sheets of foamcore with a variety of reflecting surfaces & had a blast shooting flowers, & never looked back.

This is amazing. So sad that it did not score better for you, but reading your comment on the image I am glad it holds a special place in your heart. It is very, very beautiful. Thank you for giving the detailed description of how you achieved this effect. I will try to set up something like it. I hope you don't mind, but in this case it is truly a case of "Immitation is the sincerest form of falttery".
This really is a beautiful piece. It has a flow, a richness, and just a touch of mystery. Woefully underappreciated in the challenge, but I'm quite glad you entered it and I really appreciate the story that goes with it!
this has a really nice, painterly feel yet you managed to include the sharpness of the petals - I love the different elements and the color is terrific too.
Wow, how did you do this, it's wonderful! Is it rotated? I find the painterly reflections on the right very engaging. Will definitely have to come back to this for the notes when the challenge is over :)
