This has to be my most favorite picture I have ever taken. I originally shot this for the children's toy II challenge back in August of 2007. Here is my entry, BTW the challenge was basic editing so having a chance to do this in advanced is great.
Well it's sunday morning and I am finally watching this score go back up. First thing I would like to say is thank all of you that commented on this image. I can't get over the amount of comments in this challenge. WOW, simply WOW.
I also think that a lot of people don't even remember this picture, too funny.
Anyway I guess one more thing about this picture is it was shot in jpeg with a 3.14MP point and shoot.

This is my absolute favourite from this challenge. Nothing here I don't like. I particularly love the composition, the impact the select desat has, great use of border. The kid's pigeon-toed stance/stride is the cherry on top. Excellent image. One of the very few times I've given an image a 10. Well done!
this one is stunning, i have nothing to criticize here. fascinating details, blur at the end just emphasizing uncertainty, as well as the boy's feet. i hope this one would ribbon, it has a strong story and excellent execution.
While I have only viewed a quarter of the images, so far this is among my favourites. Your selective desat is outstanding, and the picture tells a story. Hope you do well.
After having commented on all the images, I can easily say that this is my favourite shot of them all. 10, and my choice for blue.
Wonderful image. I love the bare feet, the bear hung over the shoulder. The selective color really leads you down the road. Excellent concept, composition and overall execution. 9
Oh my WORD! I hope this does as well in the scoring as it does in my mind. This is fabulous! Those irregular footsteps... the thumb I'm imagining in the mouth... the bear... the stripe and the processing.
I usually don't like selective desats but I like the way the yellow grabs you to look at the boys feet and then follow the lines off into the distance. Very nice.
What the limits of the human spirit are, and what it can endure before breaking utterly, few can guess or know. For everyone it may be a little different. A little less, a little more.
On one life-changing day in mid-July, little Kevin was to discover that sometimes the limits of the human spirit were practically endless. For on that day, a disaster struck the world, destroying much of the human population over-night. Kevin's parents were an unlucky statistic, succumbing to this tragedy in the wee hours of the morning.
However, despite all the ills and tragedies that could have fallen upon himself, when he found himself alone, he discovered something deep inside his young and fragile self. Something that took over, that persevered. Little Kevin survived.
So it was, in the days to come, that Kevin took up his favorite toy that had become a talisman to him, and started on the road, and there he was found some days later by a roving band of survivors and was adopted as one of their own.
In the years to follow, he would grow into a great and beloved leader of men, and his legend was born.
I really like this. The desat works really well with the yellow lines and the B&W conversion is great too. Only thing that stops this being a 10 from me is the yellow border which I am not that keen on. Either way it fantastic and a 9. Well done and good luck for the rest of the challenge.
I like the processing you have chosen along with the selective desaturation. Great focus and DOF. The only thing that distracts me is the yellow border but not enough to make a negative impact on my scoring. Nice job!
The selective desat and border work so well in this shot. The perspective and focus/dof are perfect - and you really did a masterful job with the tonal range in conversion.
love this. Debated with different pov (lower, further away) but all of them would not necessarily be good. you treated this well in post and the selective desat works very well here. your toning is excellent. 8
I like the texture created here. I do wish that the top were cropped a little to get rid of the white area. I just think it would highlight the subject better.
Stay on the path...follow the line and never venture off of it for you never know what lies in the unchartered territory of the woods beyond. That double yellow line is very bold and very vibrant I also get imagery that this child travels a 'yellow brick road' of sorts. Black and white tones are stunningly dynamic. The power of the image is strong for plays upon several themes. One, is of course what some children threaten to do when angry "run away from home'. This is something parents fear - especially if a child acts on it. There is another way of looking at this image symbolically. I see it as that a child will take their own path as they grow leaving childhood behind to travel roads beyond. It is a bittersweet thing for a parent to watch, but for a great many there is pride and love in the person the child grows up to be. Another symbolic way of looking at this is to project ourselves in the image and think back to the first steps we took from childhood in the journey to adulthood. A childhood remembered and forgotten at the same time - and introspective piece.
