This was taken in the actual small town of Chornobyl, about 10km south of the destructed reactor.
The people you see next to the bus are 2 out of a few hundret who still live in the area around the reactor. They're either runaway criminals or old people who refused to evacuate. The Ukrainian government and the military that polices the area acceppts them living there. They'll slowly be dying out within the next decade anyways. There are no jobs, only one shop, just ruinous buildings, no infrastructure, no future.
The further we drove north from Kiev the more the whole trip seemed to become a trip back in time, back to the year 1986. Chornobyl seemed like the perfect open air museum.
