I would have liked to get a little more DOF on this so that the newspaper was in clearer focus. After this shot, I changed my aperture to something a little narrower, and did get better DOF, but this shot had the look I was after, as if Godzilla was reading the paper and looking up over it at the viewer. Not sure if it will be obvious or too subtle that the photo on the front page is of Godzilla battling Mechagodzilla.
Wasn't happy with the low DOF of the first effort, so I re-shot the entry. The first one had an angle I liked just a touch better, though, but the shallow DOF was a problem. It's amazing how hard it can be to duplicate an exact scene, even with a staged shot on a tabletop.
Still working on my lighting. I'm getting better, but this one has a slight unevenness to the background. 430EX flash mounted on camera, pointed to my right and bounced off a white posterboard. It could have probably benefited from a white card on the left side to fill it in a little. Some graduated masks could probably adjust for it in PP, and that is something on my list of things to learn in the near future.
Here's my discarded first effort:
I think this outtake also has a little bit of a halo framing Godzilla that would have hurt it.
Too bad I didn't have a little coffee cup to put in his hand claw. That would have been a nice touch.
Pre-challenge notes:
Probably going to get killed in voting again. My humorous entries tend to place poorly. This is another one that I am pleased with, but will probably bomb in voting. Hoping for something in the 5's for this, but not counting on it. Hoping it will be able to rake in a few fun comments, though.
Post-challenge notes:
Placed a lot better than I expected. This makes my highest scoring humorous entry to date. Raked in a lot of great comments. I'm pleased.

Ah, the thing is, he didn't make the front page, as his page (i.e. the one on the right) would be one of the last pages. There's no newspaper logo on the front page (i.e. the one on the left) - it's the Culture section (!), which means the coversheet has been taken away. (Back page usually has the day's TV schedule on it.) ;-Þ
And, oh dear, 16000 Sony employees to be stood down...
Obviously I don't read Japanese like you do, and I did not ask my manager's cultural input for a Godzilla pic!
I expected someone who reads Japanese would eventually point out some problems!

I really love the subject haha. The only problem I can see with this picture is that the empty space in the upper left hand corner kind of pulls my out of the scene. I think the backround color was a good choice though.
