The foreground tree here just feels like it's in the way and blocking something more interesting.

Nice try. The central trunk is just not sharp enough, and is too central. The space on the right of it feels useless and weakens the shot, because the shadow on the left divides that space. Cropping more of the right out would have definitely improved this image.
