I NEVER use Photoshop filters, however will use the shadows/highlights tool. In this photo, I have used neither - all done in-camera. see, for me, i like the shadows like this, it leaves some detail and information in the shadows. the forehead highlight is obviously a bit on the blown out side...

it seemed may be you have used the "shadow/highlights" filter in photoshop... i dont know if you did.. but the shadows dont seem to be dark enough it kinda takes away from the picture.. other than that it is a nice composition...
