This is an oooold photography technique: you need a light source on a long string, close it in a light-tight container and punch a small hole in it, start the rotation and open the shutter. And of course you do it in complete darkness. I have a lamp on a long cable hanging from the ceiling, covered it with alu-foil and punched a small hole in the centre with a small pin. The camera was lying on the table, I pushed the lamp, opened the shutter for just under a minute, and during exposure I briefly covered the lens and pushed the lamp in another direction.
Edited in photoshop: cropped the sides, noise ninja to remove the noise of the old D30 chip, and some curves to enhance contrast - the most beneficial was to lift the red curve, it brought out the outer part of the spiral. Cloned out a few hot pixels, resized, saved in jpg.

Thank you all for great comments!
Thanks to Ecce Signum for telling me the word for this type of photography - physiograms. Here is a site with the technique explained and some of the best examples I've ever seen:
Physiograms like no others
I've wanted to learn how to do this type of shot for awhile now. Since I'm jeolous, I have no joice but to score it on honest 10! It meets the challenge well and it's a great image overall. I hope this does well.
