I have always loved the effect of volumetric lighting so I thought it would be good to try and capture it on film. For the fog I used a smoke machine and completely filled my dining room with smoke. Then using a household torch I placed it behind the bonsai and took pictures from various angles until I had a good selection to play around with..

This shot is amazing and I see why it won. Have I not read your notes on this I would not have quessed that this shot was staged, although it made me wander to see so much sun in this type of darkness. Incredible.
Now this turned out simply awesome! You did a wonderful job on this shot. The lighting is great. Actually looks like this is done outdoors on some beautiful landscaping. Great job...and congratulations!
Wow this is a stunning shot - what with various last minute crises last week I didnt have the chance to even look through the entries let alone vote - but I know this would have been a 10 from me. The shafts of light come across as good dreams breaking through the darkness don't they? Congrats on first place!
See -- told ya so! (See below) Very impressive shot, well worth the victory. The details about the shot make it even more interesting -- I never would have guessed this was on such a small scale!
Doug.. No, I thinks it a chinese elm, but not certain... Whatever it is its not evergreen as shortly after that photo was taken it started to lose its leaves..
I am understandably very happy with the placing, thanks to all who voted and those who took the time to comment.. The lightsource was just a small, 1inch diameter, flashlight (torch to us Brits) placed behind.. I took plenty of shots then went through a lengthy selection process until I picked and cropped this pic. Strangely enough this wasn't my first idea, I was initially going to use a bottle of low calorie salad cream and use the same effect, it would of probably been called LITE-SAUCE.. (get it??) Then I remember the bonsai and thought it would make cast better shadows in the smoke.. (some of you have asked me WHY Ihave a smoke machine in the house, basically I play in a function band and we use it as part of our lighting system)..
Kudos to the "Lady in Red" photo which I though would absolutely walk away with the blue ribbon this week.. I would of been more than happy to play second fiddle to that picture.. (in fact all of the top 20 photos are exceptional)..
beautiful shot, but is this really using artificial light? I'll assume so, but I can't wait to read the details or post-comment voting for more info. shedonist
That's very slick! Well thought out -- and very well executed! This one gets my brand new "Alan's Surefire Pick of the Week Award," something which I just made up. It's my way of saying, "I'll bet this is the winner." - 10 alansfreed
I don't like the vertical light on the right. I can see something there and it doesn't match the other rays. Without that, this would be an awesome shot. -7
Looks very staged, but attempts to pass as a real phenomenon. This seems like a contradiction to me, so it doesn't play well as well as it would if it were an actual captured moment.
WOW!!! I like the bonsai, I love the rays of light... for me its a wonderful, peaceful picture! If I'd look very close, there's something a bit distracting at right hand side behind the tree, can't say what it is, but it doesn't really mind, it's a great photo at all! 10 and gratulations, KAOS!
Excellent shot. (Would say 'love the lighting', but on the grounds that that is what the challenge is all about it seems a bit redundant.) seasick - 7.
