I love the way the staircase leads your eye around the photo. If you were more square on to the wall, I think the geometric shapes in the image would have created a more powerful effect.
Many times selective desat is done just for the sake of doing it, but you have done it for a real purpose, and I think it enhances your photo instead of making it seem tacky.
