One more thing, Serendipity: when you are lucky and find something interesting or valuable by chance. That being said It would in fact BE serendipitous to find THIS "cent" in a penny jar.
Quite the example of numismatic serendipity! I hope I'm in that good condition when I'm 95. Congrats on both the shot and the find ... maybe I should go check my penny jar.
This is a nice abstract compositon. I have no complaints about it on a technical or aesthetic level. However, it doesn't really meet the criteria for serendipity. I'm not surprised to see the 1909 penny in this photo because it is a carefully composed shot that was obviously planned. The finding of the penny may have been a serendipitous event for the owner but that feeling doesn't carry over into this photo.
Serendipity is a difficult concept to visualize. For me it means being at the right place, at the right time, and being lucky enough to capture something unique. Some of these entries are set up shots trying to illustrate that concept, and some record a serendipitous moment experienced by the photographer themselves. This is a particularly good example of the former. It's beautifuly composed and photographed. However, I'm not sure what's so serendipitous about a 1909 penny. Would this be more meaningful to a coin collecter?
Isn't the SVBD the one worth the BIG bucks??? I think I am showing my age now, I remember my dad always talking about that coin. Anyway thanks for the memories, and nice clear capture
NICE!!! I think this really captures the idea. From the photography point of view, i like how you have the other pennies more in focus, thus creating the illusion that it's still just one out of many, and that one just happend to turn up. Pity you didn't just happen to find a VDB one.
I guess one needs to be a coin collector to "get" the valuable coin. Nice sharp focus. Good use of the various colors, but one "perfect and shiny" penny could have made a double serendipity.
A very interesting take on the idea of serendipity. I like the composition, though I wish not all the pennies were showing their obverse side, though I can understand that you wanted to show that they weren't wheat pennies. Nice color balance. Very coppery.
I actually found a Buffalo nickel in the coin tray in my car during this competition. I was going to try to do a very similar picture to this with the nickel, but time crunch got the better of me. Nice picture. One of the few images this week that I see really matches the theme.
I like the tonal range in the choice of copper colors. Did you pick these particual pennies or were they randomly chosen? I also like the placement of the "heads up" penny and the angle of teh shot. It looks like they're sliding off the page. Just enough of a strange perspective to be interesting. Great shot.
FYI: If there is a V.D.B. on the reverse side of that coin (bottom edge), you've basically got yourself enough for a new camera. As far as the picture is concerned, I really like the composition and the ighting is perfect. Nothing is overexposed and there are no distracting shadows. Nice idea.
Hmmm. The only way this could really be serendipity is that the owner of the pennies wanted to trade them in for bills or larger denomination coins, and chose an extraordinarily honest numismatist as the 'banker'. Hopefully others will "get" what this particular coin represents. And, hopefully the coin is YOURS. Photographically, I applaud everything about the shot -l focus, color, crop, and composition. A 10 from me.
I'm not sure why, but a lot of shots in every challenge have pennies. I like this shot because its'a bit different than normal (with pennies just laying about and one is silver or something), but you may find others in DPChallenge vote lower because it's a shot that is seen a lot in DP Challenge. Good luck though.
